WMA, short for Windows Media Audio, is an audio format developed by Microsoft. Generally speaking, WMA can refer to a format or a codec. And with the support from iTunes, this format is now very popular. But some people still prefer MP3. If you’re one of them, you may want to convert from WAV to MP3. Lots of programs that offer this feature such as online audio converter, VLC Media Player and iTunes. Here we will show you how to use iTunes to convert WAV to MP3.
Configure iTunes to Create MP3
Step 1. Launch iTunes.
Step 2. Open Preferences (on Windows, do this by going to “Edit” -> “Preferences”. On a Mac, go to iTunes -> Preferences).
Step 3. Click the “Import” Settings button towards the bottom of the General tab. You’ll find it next to the “When a CD is inserted” drop-down.
Step 4. In the Import Settings window, choose “MP3 Encoder” from the “Import Using” drop-down.
Step 5. You should also choose something in the Setting menu. The higher the quality setting, the better the converted song will sound. I’d recommend 256 kbps. Never use anything lower than the current bit rate of the WAV file you’re converting. Pick your setting and click “OK”.
Step 6. Click “OK” in the Preferences window to close it.
Convert WAV to MP3
Step 1. Find the WAV files you want to convert in iTunes library. You can select songs one at a time or in a group of non-contiguous files by holding down Control (on Windows) or Command (on Mac) while you click each file.
Step 2. When you’ve selected all the files you want to convert, you have two choices for how to begin the conversion:
- Click on the “File” menu in iTunes, then “Create New Version”, and select “Create MP3 Version”.
- Right click on the selected files and choose “Create MP3 Version” from the pop-up menu
Step 3. After you make your choice, the conversion begins. How long that takes depends on how many songs you’re converting and your settings.
The converted MP3 music file will be automatically generated and will be placed right under the original file in the music library (Under LIBRARY select Music). However, it is clear that iTunes only converts a limited audio file format, including MP3, WAV, AIFF, and AAC. If you want to convert an MP3 or WAV file to OGG or WMA, you will need a profession audio converter like Streaming Audio Recorder which is capable of converting various audio formats including AAC, FLAC, OGG, MP3 WMA, FLAC and WAV.
